How to choose an engagement ring.

The word "lab-grown" makes some people pause. It shouldn't. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond — same carbon, same crystal, same hardness, same fire. The only difference is where it grew: in a controlled chamber over a few weeks, instead of underground over a billion years.

It is graded by the same independent labs, set the same way, and lasts exactly as long. What you save is the markup — not the quality. More on this in our FAQ.

Jewellers describe a diamond with four words that all start with C. Here is what each one actually means for you.

The shape is the part she'll see every single day — so let it sound like her. The round brilliant is the classic: quiet, safe, endlessly sparkly. But there is a whole world beyond it.

A few of our rare cuts: Portuguese for someone who loves detail; Old Mine for an old-soul, candlelit warmth; Dutch Marquise or Elongated Hexagon for the architecturally-minded; Ashoka for a soft, modern glow.

The setting is how the stone is held; the metal is the band. Both come down to how the ring looks and how it lives on a real, busy hand.

You don't have to ask and spoil the surprise. Borrow a ring she already wears on that finger and trace the inside circle, or press it gently into a bar of soap. Slip it into your pocket for an hour and bring it to us — we'll size it exactly.

And if you're a little off? Resizing is normal and easy. It's far better to propose with the right moment than the perfect millimetre.

Forget the old "three months' salary" rule — someone selling diamonds invented it. A good budget is simply one that doesn't follow you home as stress.

Every serious diamond comes with a certificate from an independent lab — usually IGI or GIA. Think of it as the stone's passport: an unbiased record of its cut, colour, clarity and carat, plus a unique ID laser-etched onto the diamond itself.
